You aren’t wrong– there does seem to be a Walgreens on just about every corner of every town in America. But, how did they get there? Where did they all come from?

7 Things You Didn’t Know About Walgreens:
  1. Walgreens was founded in Chicago, Illinois in 1901 by Charles Walgreen.
  2. By 1919 Walgreens had 20 stores and though alcohol was illegal during the 1920s, prescription whiskey was legally sold by the chain.
  3. Walgreens introduced a malted milkshake to its stores in 1922, which led to the establishment of ice cream manufacturing plants. Walgreens takes credit for the popularization of this partially frozen treat invented by Ivar Coulson.
  4. Walgreens stock went public in 1927.
  5. In 1931, Walgreens became the first chain drugstore to advertise on the radio, using Chicago Cubs announcer Bob Elson as the voice of Walgreens.
  6. Walgreens was the first major drugstore to put prescriptions in child-resistant containers in the 1960s.
  7. As of 2018, there were 9,500 stores nationwide. Florida operates the most Walgreens stores with 820.

 

Original Old Fashioned Chocolate Malted Milk Recipe:

  • Use a Frosted Malt Can
  • 1 1/2 oz. Chocolate Syrup
  • 3 – #16 Dips of Vanilla Ice Cream
  • 5 1/2 oz. of Cold Milk
  • Add Malt Powder (One Heaping Tablespoonful)
  • Place On Mixer Only Until Mixed – Do Not Over Mix
  • Use a Generous Portion of Whipped Topping In A #1808 – 10 oz. Glass
  • Pour Malted Milk in Glass Approximately 2/3 Full
  • Serve Remainder Of Malted In A Shaker Along With The Glass To The Guest With Straws and Package of Fountain Treat Cookies
